Designer Secrets. Shh….

The first that we are going to tell you is to create a color palette to define your interior. It is very important that the colors suit the style you want to achieve, from contemporary, to rustic and modern. Focus on how you would like to achieve your space.

Organize 60 percent of books vertically and 40 percent horizontally on the shelves. This creates balance yet spontaneity (and shows off the back of the bookshelf if it has a creative look). You can add green plants to soften the bookshelf as well but not too much color, it can be distracting and look cluttered.

Mirror, mirror, on the wall: What is the best placement of them all? Centered at about 57 inches high, experts say. This is an easy, strain-free eye level for most people. To create the illusion of more space, mount a mirror opposite a window to bounce light.

When choosing a color palette, assign 60 percent of the room a dominant color, 30 percent a secondary color, and 10 percent an accent color. In a classic room setting, this may translate to designating walls the dominant color, upholstery the secondary color, and a floral arrangement or pillows the accent color. If you have a nice view outside, frame it by painting the interior window trims a dark color.

Add focal points. Consider where you want to draw the eye. In every room there is some point of inspiration, whether it’s a fantastic carpet you found in your travels or a beautiful painting that would be just perfect over the mantel. Make choices that complement your home. If you love your sofa, add a chic lumbar pillow. If you have a pair of lamps that feel a bit plain, custom lampshades add punch.

Mix and match decor—make the space feel imbued with layers of interest. It’s easier to appreciate beautiful things if they have a point of contrast, and mixing styles and eras is what brings character to a space. Every room wants to feel contemporary, but also like it’s been there for some time.

Work in symmetry. There is something welcoming and approachable about traditional decorating in the bedroom. To bring order and balance, make use of symmetrical arrangements. Well-mannered pairs of lamps or nightstands in the master bedroom, twin beds or bookshelves in a kid’s room. The doubling effect creates a polish that’s pleasing to the eye.

The ceiling can be decorated, too! Think of your ceiling as a fifth wall and take advantage of the blank canvas to add color or design to your space. If your walls are a neutral color, paint the celing to be bold or use wallpaper to add texture.
