How to Perk Up Your Rooms with Color

How to perk up your rooms with color? It’s hard to believe summer is over, oh wait we are heading straight into winter friends! Before we go head first into the holidays and before you start slapping paint all over the blank canvas on your walls, consider these “baby-step” options to perk your rooms with color:

Use the 60-30-10 Rule.

Say what? This is a simple rule that is used on any portfolio and an easy rule to follow. Decorating a space in terms of color is as easy as 60-30-10. Hesitant? Think this doesn’t apply to your creativeness? Ah, Google some of your favorite designs and you will absolutely see the 60-30-10 rule.  You’ll notice that the rooms you like the most are almost invariably divided into percentages of 60-30-10. The 30 percent provides visual interest and the 10 percent, provides that little perk of color.

So, when decorating a particular room, divide the colors into percentages:
60% of a dominant color
30% of a secondary color
10% of an accent color

Experiment with Paint.

Many paint companies, including California Paints and Benjamin Moore offer small samples. That’s enough paint to cover a 1’ by 2’ area, which should give you a good idea of what your chosen hue really looks like. I always work with my clients whenever paint is choosen, view it in the actual room that will be painted. Most paints appear darker in low light and lighter in natural light. If you are also changing light fixtures, make sure to also view in natural and artificial light depending on what you choose.

MIX AND MATCH TEXTILES.

Want the easy button? Who doesn’t! Fabrics are one of the quickest ways to bring color into a space. Swap out the pillows on your couch, throw a new coverlet over the bed, or roll out a bright rug along your hallway to inject color with minimum effort.

Use diffused lighting.

If you have a dark corner or a room where there’s no ceiling fixture, use multiple lights pointed towards the ceiling and walls. This reflected light provides a soft, overhead glow which minimizes harsh shadows. Don’t overlook candles! They are a pleasant source of extra light. When you want to create an especially bright, cheerful atmosphere, light some candles in addition to using artificial lighting.

Color-match.

Not sure know how to mix different colors together? Try sticking to a simple palette of two hues. A simple scheme creates a fresh and modern look that allows you to add or subtract pieces as you discover new finds.
